What Runners Can Expect at the Kennedy Space Center Race
In the upcoming year, the Kennedy Space Center Space Race 3K Walk/Run is scheduled to be held on Friday, January 19, 2024. Participants will enjoy a race route that runs through the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex on Merritt Island that’s designed for great competition to foster a sense of community spirit as well. Participating in the Kennedy Space Center Space Race 3K Walk/Run is a great chance for athletes to put their skills to the test. It’s also a one-of-a-kind opportunity for runners and walkers alike to enjoy a route that showcases some amazing Kennedy Space Center displays and exhibits.
Route Attractions to Look Forward to Along the Way
While runners and walkers will certainly be trying their best to finish in great time, being a part of the Kennedy Space Center Space Race 3K Walk/Run also means enjoying incredible sights. The route is mapped out to take athletes through the historic Rocket Garden where they can admire nine rockets on-site. The route continues through the booster stack leading to the Space Shuttle Atlantis entryway which is equally appealing. It’s hard to top running your way through the iconic Heroes & Legends exhibit while time racing through the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame is exceptional every step of the way. Be sure to enjoy the Mercury 7 Mural while you race—a highlight you won’t soon forget.
Race Timing and Awards
This 3K race works out to a 1.86-mile route for athletes to traverse. It’s an experience that has many athletes returning for the fun year after year. The race is timed by chip-determined technology through the Running Zone and top finishers are awarded in men’s and women’s categories as well as age categories. Winners enjoy the added honor of receiving their race medal from a veteran NASA astronaut. Once all of the top finishers have been named and awarded, an after party kicks off for all race participants in the Rocket Garden. Count on plenty of food, beverages, and music to go around.
Registration Information for Participants
Adults who enter the Orlando Kennedy Space Center Space Race 3K Walk/Run have until December 31, 2023, to register for just $35 per person. The race is also open to athletes 12 years of age and under with youth category participants running or walking for $20 per athlete. If you happen to miss the December 31 deadline, you can still register between January 1, 2024, and January 18, 2024, at an increased rate. During this time, adult registration bumps up to $40 per person, and youth athletes 12 and under can participate for $25. Same-day registration prices jump to $45 for adults and $30 for kids. Everyone who registers to participate will receive a complimentary race shirt and a free beer or wine at the Rocket Garden after-party.
A Race for a Great Cause
While the Kennedy Space Center Space Race 3K Walk/Run is always fun for athletes, it’s also a race for a great cause. Proceeds from the race are put towards the efforts at the United Way of Brevard. These funds help more than 82,000 people living in poverty with registration fees and donations put back towards supporting community efforts to fight homelessness, hunger, and domestic violence. Race spectators are encouraged to give a $5 donation to contribute to these community efforts.
